Drake Maverick announced in his first appearance as 205 Live general manager last week that a tournament to crown the next Cruiserweight Champion will be held in the weeks leading up to WrestleMania 34.

The final, so he continued, will take place on the Grandest Stage of Them All itself - although, knowing WWE, it is perhaps more likely that it is relegated to the pre-show, like Neville versus Austin Aries was last year.

Still, this is broadly a step in the right direction. It means that, whatever the 205 Live offering in New Orleans, it will at least come off the back of a healthy couple of months of build-up, with the new title holder crowned on the biggest night of the calendar.

None of this is to imply that WrestleMania 33's cruiserweight match wasn't worthy of the name - in fact, it was one of the better-rated spectacles of the show - but it lacked the build-up and excitement that could come with a well-built 16-man tournament (especially if we get one or two surprise entrants along the way).
