9 Ups & 1 Down From AEW Dynamite (5 Jan - Review)
5. Swerve Strickland vs. AR Fox
Some of the work AR Fox and Swerve Strickland did in their singles match was so advanced, it may have registered as mistake-ridden to the untrained aye.
The duo were in perfect sync with one another throughout. Demonstrating rare levels of cohesion, they flipped, countered, and slid out of each others' way seamlessly, maintaining a breathless pace without sacrificing fluidity. While it would be reductive to label either a mere high-flyer, as both are capable of so much more, the flying spots here were a cut above even AEW's high standards - and Swerve's flawless German Suplex counter from a Cutter attempt will take some beating.
Leaning on their immense history and chemistry from Lucha Underground, Fox and Strickland delivered exactly the kind of match they needed in this spot. Parker Boudreaux and Painted Face Man (thanks, Taz) were threats throughout and beyond his athletic performance, Swerve was perfectly cruel. His Swerve Stomp after already crushing Fox with an apron Death Valley Driver (from the top rope) was completely unnecessary - which is why it was entirely necessary.
Strickland proved a point. He went one step further than the needed to because his character is a prick. And if Keith Lee was watching, he probably felt something go bump in his ribcage.
