9 Ups & 2 Downs From AEW Dynamite (5 Oct)
2. Jon Moxley Cuts A Great Promo Even By His Standards
Jon Moxley stormed the ring to confront Hangman Page, and magic was cast. This was great - so great that Mox sold buys for a pay-per-view match that isn't even happening.
"Between the two of us, we've beaten just about everybody there is to beat here in AEW - except each other."
That line was exceptional. In just 20 words - where some wrestlers feel the need to drag a point over 20 minutes - Moxley put over himself, his opponent, and the match. His words were credible; there is no top star in the promotion that hasn't eaten a defeat to Page and or Mox.
Kenny Omega. CM Punk. Bryan Danielson. MJF. Chris Jericho. Adam Cole. Eddie Kingston. (Cody Rhodes, having left doesn't really count).
What a great observation, and what a tremendous way of dressing up a TV match as a major, unpredictable contest between the two winningest babyfaces in the history of the promotion. Mox was respectful, threatening and possibly even apprehensive, all at once. This was a money promo.
It's not enough for a promotion to just put on great matches. At its best, AEW Dynamite is an unbeatable blend of in-ring, promos and angles, and this show nailed the trifecta and elevated itself into ep of the year contention.
