9 Ups And 1 Down From WWE NXT (Aug 3)
4. Trey Baxter Makes The Semis, Odyssey Awaits
Having already come up against KUSHIDA in a Cruiserweight Championship bout earlier in the summer, NXT fans were already slightly clued up on what Trey Baxter brought to the table before his Breakout tournament showdown with Joe Gacy last night. But that didn't mean he was a shoe-in to qualify for the semis. The veteran wasn't here just to take part, after all.
Bullying Baxter from the get-go, Gacy used his obvious power advantage well, swatting the high flier out of the air and clubbing him with relative ease for much of the one-sided contest. However, everyone loves a good underdog, and it wasn't too long before Baxter had wiggled his way into an opening, nailing his rival with a flying springboard dropkick, swiftly followed by three dives to the outside in a row.
In the end, not even a running cannonball (with Baxter on Gacy's back!) could put down the plucky 24 year-old. One 450 stomp (yep, that's a thing) later, Baxter was through and the man mountain that is Odyssey Jones now stands between him and the final.
David vs. Goliath battle of the rising stars? Hook that sh*t into our veins.
