If there's one way to get the crowd to turn you from face to heel in a heartbeat, it's wrestling an extensive programme against the 'polarising' John Cena. That's exactly the situation that Kurt Angle found himself in in late 2005/early 2006 as he was partnered with the increasingly loathsome 'Big Match John'.

Angle had enjoyed a great year inside the squared circle, working a series of blinders with the likes of Shawn Michaels, Shelton Benjamin and others. He was a wrestling machine, a guy who always put on a great show and he was charismatic as hell to boot.

Angle began feuding with Cena in late 2005 and it was obvious from the off that Cena was a step or two behind the Olympic gold medalist (even though the two had produced blinders months previously, Cena seemed to regress a little as a worker).

The fans cheered Angle.

To remedy this, WWE had him be managed by the unlikeable Daivari. The fans cheered Angle. Then WWE had Kurt cut a promo saying that he hoped Iraq won the war, thought the greatest country in the world was France, would have loved to make Jesus tap out and wasn't too found of 'the black people'.

The fans cheered Angle.

Clearly, a face turn was necessary, even though WWE resisted and wanted Angle to continue playing the heel. He was drafted over to Smackdown to the void left by top babyface Batista, who required surgery. Angle won the World Heavyweight Title in his first night back on the blue brand and finally began basking in the adulation of the adoring masses.
