Sunday evening saw AEW Executive Vice President Cody tease a "fun announcement" from the promotion, stating it'd be something "fans have been clamouring for," and the company came through as promised.

AEW has announced an eight-man single-elimination tournament to crown their inaugural TNT Champion via official press release:-

The writeup confirms that half of the participants will be announced on tonight's episode of Dark with the rest named on Wednesday's Dynamite. As things stand, the tournament will conclude at Double Or Nothing on 23 May, where the first TNT Champion shall be crowned.

"I'm glad we're now able to announce the TNT CHAMPIONSHIP," said AEW President and CEO Tony Khan. "It's only fitting that the champion and the title belt will carry the logo of the globally-respected TNT brand, and that they'll represent not only AEW but also the great quality programming, massive reach, and storied history in the wrestling business that are all associated with TNT."

So there we have it: a midcard title in AEW, which is, indeed, something many fans have been clamouring for. It'll be interesting to see what names end up filling the tournament out.
