AEW Introducing TWO New Sets Of Tag Team Titles: Women's AND... (AEW News)
Tony Khan plans to debut new AEW Inter-Generational Tag Team Championships as well.
Bodyslam.net has reported that AEW chief Tony Khan is currently waiting for the right time to introduce not one but TWO fresh sets of tag-team titles onto company programming. Their write-up included details on Khan having new Women's Tag-Team belts and straps for the quirky AEW Inter-Generational Tag Team Championships made at the same time.
There's no word on precisely when either will show up on television.
Many fans have been expecting to see Women's Tag Titles for a while now. According to Bodyslam.net, both those and these new Inter-Generational prizes "have sat on the shelf for about a year". When added, they'll bolster Khan's trophy cabinet - currently, AEW offers no less than 15 different titles across core All Elite and ROH. That number will change soon.
Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada meet at All In on 12 July to combine the International and Continental belts into one. Just before that, a brand new ROH Women's Pure Champ will be crowned at Supercard Of Honor on 11 July. In other words, Tony is about to drop a title (by combining two), then add one to restore the numbers.
The Inter-Generational belts will pique some interest amongst fans. The basic premise is a 'father/son' dynamic, but the rules don't seem to be 100% locked in. Bodyslam.net reports that this is why there's been some more focus on Christian Cage and Nick Wayne. Other pairings who could get involved include Billy Gunn and Anthony Bowens (who has called Gunn "Daddy Ass" for years), as well as Ricky Morton and his son Kerry.
Opinion: Inter-Generational Tag Titles Will Raise Some Eyebrows
"Pique some interest" is one way of putting it. Another would be suggesting that there might be some eye-rolling from critics or fans who already think Khan's product is stretched too thin across core AEW and ROH programming. Adding two new sets of tag belts, unique parameters or not, will only further dilute what All Elite presents on-screen.
A general rule of thumb for some is that it's harder to care the more belts a promotion has. Many end up becoming totally worthless as a result. In theory, introducing another few sets of titles would only exacerbate the issue and add to the soup of gold currently doing the rounds on Dynamite, Collision and via Honor tapings.
Bodyslam.net did note that nothing is guaranteed here. AEW did have the Inter-Generational belts made, but that doesn't necessarily mean they'll put them on TV sooner rather than later. Tony might've thought better of it and ultimately decided to go in a different direction.
The Women's Tag straps have been dangling in limbo for a while, but there seems to be a better chance they'll show up imminently.
