AEW's Backstage View On Signing Sheamus After WWE Release Revealed (WWE News)
Could ex-WWE man Sheamus me bet with a frosty reception backstage over at AEW?
The Wrestling Observer's Bryan Alvarez has sensationally claimed that AEW's roster wouldn't be in favour of boss Tony Khan inking a deal with now ex-WWE man Sheamus. Alvarez revealed via Wrestling Observer Live that several wrestlers he's spoken to say they "really like" Sheamus, but none of them particularly want him to join the roster.
Why? Well, that'd be yet another top position on TV snagged, which would (in theory) push somebody else further down the pecking order. If Sheamus did come in, there's no way the 48 year old would be propping up cards on Dynamite or Collision - the Irishman would be treated like a big deal and would probably work some main events quickly.
The prevailing attitude behind the curtain at AEW is: "Here comes another one". That's also the general feeling on New Day pair Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods potentially signing soon. All Elite's current crop are all keenly aware that TV time is at a premium, so they could do without the extra competition from shiny new toys.
On a more positive note, Sheamus agreeing terms with Khan could reunite his critically lauded tag-team with Claudio Castagnoli. The duo's work together as The Bar in WWE will go down as a career highlight for both, so there might be something for Tony to work with in a tag sense.
Overall, "people weren't really thrilled about that idea". "That idea" being Sheamus sitting down to talk things over with Khan. It's nothing personal, to be fair. AEW stars simply know there's only a finite number of slots on weekly television.
