AEW's Matt Hardy Reveals What WWE Had Planned For Him

What would Matt's role have been had he re-signed with the company?

Matt Hardy spurned WWE's advances earlier this year and decided to make a leap of faith over to AEW.

The veteran has been roundly praised for backing himself, but has said in prior interviews that leaving WWE was never going to be an easy decision. During a recent chat with Chris Van Vliet though, Matt admitted that he didn't like what Vince McMahon had in mind for his future.

Instead of continuing as an in-ring worker, Hardy would've transitioned into a backstage role as a WWE producer. He told the promotion he was happy to do that, but wanted to bag the gig "a little later on" - Matt still feels he has a lot to offer as an active, full-time wrestler.

McMahon, clearly, disagreed with that.

Hardy didn't understand why he couldn't keep working full-time and help mentor younger wrestlers on the roster. That's a balance he has struck since moving to AEW, and he told Van Vliet how happy he is that All Elite see his value.

WWE had mentally moved on from the thought of booking 45 year old Hardy as a wrestler, so he knew he had to get out.
