AEW's Original Plans For Marty Scurll Revealed
Could 'The Villain' have saved AEW's most unpopular angle?
Marty Scurll ended months of speculation by pledging his wrestling future to Ring of Honor earlier this week, signing a lucrative new deal that will see him join the promotion's booking team, play a big role in building relationships with other companies, and seemingly work a relaxed schedule with the freedom to appear for other wrestling groups as well.
This came as something of a surprise, given his close affiliation with AEW and The Elite. Regardless, 'The Villain' has by all accounts scored himself an incredible deal.
This week's Wrestling Observer Newsletter reveals AEW's plans for Scurll had he signed for them. Per the writeup, Marty was their "first choice to be the leader of the Dark Order," and they'd have debuted him though the heel faction's beatdown of The Elite on the 18 December Corpus Christi show, ending with his reveal.
Said angle was a colossal misfire, with fans and critics unrestrained in their criticism as Evil Uno, Grayson, and their followers destroyed some of AEW's biggest names to minimal heat. Could a Scurll unveiling have saved it? The moment itself would've certainly drawn a big pop, though it's hard to tell.
