Mercedes Martinez cut a curious figure in the Mae Young Classic - one of the most dominant women in SHIMMER and a veteran of the indie scene, yet one of last stars to truly catch on the with the crowd. She wasn't helped by a pair of distinctly average opening matches, against the inexperienced Xia Li and disjointed Princesa Sugehit.
Thankfully for Martinez, she was given a couple of matches to really get her teeth into in the latter stages of the tournament. As mentioned, her battle with Abbey Laith was one of the first bouts to truly feel like a climactic coming-together of competition favourites. Afterwards, she took on fearsome stablemate Baszler and succumbed to that rear naked choke in an excellent contest. She may have taken some time to get going, but Mercedes eventually showed why she was so highly regarded prior to the Classic.
