With it now confirmed that a special edition of WWE Backstage this Saturday will reveal the #30 entrant of the men’s Royal Rumble and the #1 and #2 spots of the women’s Royal Rumble, Fightful Select now has an update on the logic behind this call.

Fightful reports that WWE and FOX wanted to maximise viewership figures for this upcoming WWE Backstage special, and thus it was decided to have certain Royal Rumble reveals made on the FS1 broadcast of the returning show.

Elsewhere, last night’s WWE Raw saw Edge appear and announce how he’ll be returning to action this weekend as a part of the men’s Royal Rumble.

Many fans wondered why the Rated-R Superstar’s impending return wasn’t held off as a surprise for the Rumble PPV, and Fightful indicates that the reason for announcing the 11-time World Champion’s return ahead of time was in order to generate buzz going into Sunday’s event.

The belief is that Edge’s return would likely have remained a secret if there were to be fans in attendance at this year’s Royal Rumble. With that not happening, it was deemed best to make this major reveal in the week leading to the Rumble PPV as a way to bring in lapsed eyes who may now be more inclined to watch the event knowing that the WWE Hall of Famer will be lacing up his boots once again.
