Backstage Update On John Cena's WWE Status (WWE News)
The latest on John Cena's current WWE status.
Having called time on his legendary in-ring career at the end of 2025, questions continue to persist about whether John Cena really is done as an active wrestler.
Of course, the wrestling world is one filled with so many 'retirements' that eventually lead to a talent returning to action, only to then retire again, only to then return to action, only to then retire again, only to then... you get the idea. And so, when a wrestler says they've retired, there's often some skepticism surrounding that statement.
In the case of John Cena, Cena himself has called it "financial suicide" for a company to want him back in the ring, adding that a promoter would have to be "in the business of torching currency" if they wanted him to wrestle.
As for AEW potentially making a bold play to bring in Big Match John, Fightful Select reports that this hasn't been discussed, is not a possibility, and that Cena remains under a multi-year WWE deal to serve as an ambassador for the market leader. When Fightful outright asked a WWE source whether John would even be able to wrestle elsewhere if he wanted to, that's contractually not possible.
For those wondering what the latest is on the John Cena Classic that was announced back in May at WWE Backlash, Fightful adds that it's still planned to take place later this year, with December being targeted.
In terms of WWE, John Cena was most recently featured as part of WWE Unreal's third season. Away from WWE, the record-setting 17-time World Champion has the hotly anticipated Coyote vs. Acme movie releasing later this month.
