Backstage Update On WWE's Plans For Vince McMahon Vs. Pat McAfee

Wanna know how a 76-year-old man is going to "wrestle" a retired NFL punter turned WWE commentator?

Vince McMahon breaking his 12-year absence from the wrestling ring to face Pat McAfee at WrestleMania 38 remains the talk of the wrestling press following the plan's public emergence this weekend.

While nothing is confirmed yet, it has been speculated that WWE will plant seeds for the bout this Thursday, when McMahon is scheduled to appear on McAfee's show. From there, the promotion will likely lean heavily on it as part of the WrestleMania marketing campaign - as it still has around 20,000 tickets left to sell for the 2 and 3 April events.

As far as the match itself goes, Dave Meltzer writes in the latest Wrestling Observer/Figure Four Online that it will be a "complete smoke and mirrors event," despite Vince being advertised as a wrestler.

Most fans would have seen this coming. At 76 years old, Vince was hardly going to lace up like Bad Bunny and start delivering Canadian Destroyers, particularly as McAfee isn't exactly a tenured wrestler himself, with only two WWE matches to his name.

McMahon last competed in a derided No Holds Barred match with Bret Hart at WrestleMania XXVI in 2010, though this, too, was more of an angle than a match.
