Just when you think you've run out of "firsts" for the women's division, WWE pulls out a surprise.

Bianca Belair and Bayley battled in the company's first ladder match for a singles title, as the EST successfully defended her Raw Women's Championship at Extreme Rules.

Bayley seemed destined to capture gold Saturday, as she named the time, place and stipulation, and her Damage CTRL stable took out Belair's allies Asuka and Alexa Bliss on Raw last week, leaving the champ at a huge disadvantage.

But Belair overcame the odds and knocked off Bayley, retrieving her title to remain champion. The match itself was pretty good, with both women not rushing things and hitting some innovative spots, along with some tried and true ladder match staples. A highlight though was Bianca hitting a double KOD on both Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky to neutralize Bayley's running buddies.

While Belair winning is a bit of a surprise given the odds and assumed booking direction, She really has been a tremendous champion, so it also makes sense to continue to ride this title reign longer and let her build her legacy.

But for now, can we knock off the ladder matches? If someone has been tracking them, you'd probably find that WWE has done more of these in the past five years than the previous 20 combined.
