Bret Hart's WrestleMania Matches - Ranked From Worst To Best

2. Vs. Owen Hart - WrestleMania X

Objectively the greatest opening match in WrestleMania history, Bret's road to WWF Championship redemption at WrestleMania X started with a bout against his brother, 'The Rocket' Owen Hart. The younger Hart felt that he had been in Bret's shadow for far too long, and he turned on him at the Royal Rumble earlier in the year. The two were booked in a match for the show, with Owen looking to prove that he was every bit as good (if not better) than his much-loved brother.

What follows is 20 minutes of absolutely fantastic professional wrestling. Owen plays his character to absolute perfection here, gloating and over-celebrating whenever he manages to get one up on Bret. The technical stuff soon starts to fall away as emotions rise higher and higher, Owen getting more and more frustrated that Bret seems to have an answer for everything that comes his way.

Bret injures his leg and Owen is immediately on it, akin to the fabled shark who smells blood. He applies the Sharpshooter, but of course Bret knows a way out of it. Owen eventually gives up on the wrestling and simply boots his brother in the nuts, an act conveniently missed by the referee. It's a wrestling hold that ends the match however, as Owen counters a victory roll into a pin of his own for the win.

Even now, some 22 years later, this match is a joy to behold. It set up Owen to challenge Bret later in the year, and really put the younger Hart on the map in WWF. If it was anyone else this match would be a walk at the top of any 'Best Of' list.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man.
