With Pat McAfee now firmly cemented as a fixture of WWE WrestleMania 42 Night 1's main event, Cody Rhodes has given some thoughts on the left-field choice to involve McAfee in the Cody and Randy Orton rivalry.

Speaking during an appearance on Matt and Shane's Secret Podcast, the American Nightmare was asked about his upcoming 'Mania main event:

"Randy Orton, who I’m wrestling at WrestleMania, we have almost two decades of history between each other. He was my mentor. I had [John] Cena, who I drove around. I had Randy. Very different opinions, but also really helped shape me. We were on screen together as part of his group, Legacy. He had my dad's last match. My first match in the company is Randy. There was a lot of rich story material, and then we inserted Pat McAfee. We are literally in that part right there. So, your question is everybody else’s question.”

Rhodes would then add:

"What I would say is, right now, what I've seen is everybody around Pat McAfee or his orbit, probably someone needs to say 'no' every now and then."

Continuing on the notion that somebody needs to say no to certain ideas, the WWE Champion brought up his old tag team partner Bob Holly:

"We were talking about Bob Holly earlier, man. You need that one guy in the room to be, like, 'I dunno, man. Jumping into the WrestleMania main event?' Also, while I was getting my ass kicked in the ring the other night, looking up, and he's wearing shades. He put the shades on to go out there. It's a different era of wrestling. It was like watching a guy at a bar doing a Stone Cold impression."

As has been heavily reported in recent weeks, the decision to insert Pat McAfee into the Rhodes vs. Orton rivalry was an Ari Emanuel call. In addition to being the TKO CEO, Emanuel is also nowadays the agent of McAfee.

Additionally, certain WWE talent and backstage figures are said to be frustrated at the sudden inclusion of Pat McAfee in a feud that, as Cody Rhodes touched on, already has so much built-in, authentic history to it.
