One of Cody Rhodes' closest pro wrestling associates has revealed what the former AEW Executive Vice President and TNT Champion said to him in a private telephone conversation prior to leaving the Tony Khan-helmed promotion.

Speaking with Fightful, WCW icon Diamond Dallas Page said that Rhodes was full of praise for Khan on his way out of AEW, but while Cody was willing to tell DDP that he was leaving America's second-biggest promotion, he couldn't yet disclose his next move:-

"Cody called me two days before. He said, ‘Listen, I’m gonna tell you something. But I can only tell you so much. But I know if I don’t call you and tell you, you’re gonna want to kill me. You’ll be so pissed off, so I have to call and tell you that I love Tony Khan. He’s a great guy. He loves me. But we’re gonna split up and I want to go off and do something else. I can’t tell you about what it is right now, but I promise at some point I will.’ I don’t want to know sometimes. You know what I mean? I want to be surprised. I gave him all of my viewpoints on everything. I don’t know if you’re doing this, I don’t know if you’re doing that, I don’t know if you’re doing this. But I gave him my viewpoints and then Cody’s a man. He’s very successful. To me whatever he does, I wish him the best. I hope I helped him with some of my insights to help direct him. But he’s gonna do what he’s gonna do."

Rhodes officially departed AEW following weeks of speculation a fortnight ago, having worked for the promotion without a contract following the expiration of his previous deal in December 2021.

This was understandably followed by a storm of reports on the matter, with the reasons for Cody's AEW split ranging from monetary to creative, though it is believed that the two sides have agreed not to comment on the matter publically.

Though heavily linked to WWE since leaving AEW, the former Stardust's Stamford comeback is yet to materialise. Nonetheless, it is understood that if WWE ends up bringing Rhodes back, Vince McMahon has major plans for him.
