12. Sgt. Slaughter

Sgt Slaughter's best years were definitely behind him when he won the WWF Championship at Royal Rumble 1991. Combine that with the fact that his reign ended in just 64 days and the Sarge's placement on this list is looking as dubious as his real life military honours. But, in reality, those 64 days came at a very interesting time for the WWF.

Slaughter was brought in to defeat The Ultimate Warrior, the man originally destined to replace Hulk Hogan as the face of the company. Unfortunately for Warrior, the company decided they wanted Hogan back and gave him a "foreign" heel to slay at WrestleMania (Sarge was in the midst of his Iraqi sympathiser gimmick at the time). That's exactly what happened, with Hogan winning his third WWF title by beating Sarge in the main event of WrestleMania VII.

Whilst his matches were nothing special and his gimmick was controversial to say the least, Slaughter did at least bag a WrestleMania headline spot out of his time as champion and being sandwiched between two of the most iconic champions of the era doesn't hurt his case either.
