Reinvention Of Chris Jericho

Chris Jericho is as superb at marketing his reinventions as he is at actually reinventing himself - so much so that he has effectively obscured a considerable stretch in which he remained stagnant.

From around 2013 to 2016, Jericho was a sporadic presence in WWE, returning every now and then between Fozzy tours to lend his star power to various emerging, younger talents. To illustrate just how scattershot the booking was, and how little his appearances seemed to matter as a result, Jericho put over Fandango (WrestleMania 29) and went over Bray Wyatt (!) (Battleground '14).

He played a composite version of his previous characters throughout what was, in all honesty, an uninspiring lull in his otherwise seminal career. He ran through the old babyface hits on the microphone, but WWE's undisciplined approach to his legend, and in general, meant his arbitrary defeats never amounted to much. He did the job for Ryback at Money In The Bank 2013, as an example, but it didn't much matter. WWE had conflated Jericho with virtually everybody by then. If nothing else, Jericho clearly learned something from this.

He knows his value, and that lofty self-valuation has informed arguably the greatest phase of his career...
