Time was that big-budget Hollywood, disaster movies designed specifically to a) make one star look like a big deal and b) shift a lot of popcorn out of the lobby were the norm. Not today, of course, when ultra-gritty, wider-universe, ensemble films are all the rage, but San Andreas was a welcome throwback to the standalone age.

The focus is shifted away from the science and the realism and put squarely on Johnson instead. The finished product is thrilling and focused, with something in it for almost all film fans.
