Every NXT TakeOver Main Event In History: Ranked
20. DIY Vs. Authors Of Pain – Takeover: Chicago
The story of DIY is arguably
one of NXT’s, if not WWE as whole’s best sagas in history. This match acted as
the end of their first chapter, as well as the explosive start to their second
one. While most people remember this match for the post-match heel turn of
Tommaso Ciampa, many forget just how good the match was. It is surprising, that
despite how good this contest was, it is the only time so far that the tag
belts have gone on last.
This match was the first whispers of the spot fest like contests that NXT has become known for, as all four men were flying all over the ring from the outset. The drama was high as all combatants traded blows and just about almost set the record for broken ladders. Ciampa’s intensity was scary as he sewed some seeds for the return of the ‘Psycho Killer', as well as ‘Johnny Wrestling’ being the embodiment of babyface spirit. Rezar and Akam also made sure nobody left the arena thinking that they were just a Triple H pet project and that they deserved their spot as top dogs, throwing their big bodies with blatant disregard.
Every
spot felt like it had genuinely injured someone and that is what made the turn
by Ciampa, beating down the utterly broken Gargano so much more painful to
watch.
