Yes, I'm putting John Cena vs. Randy Orton at number three on this list.

This match could even be considered one of the most egregious examples of John Cena's Superman status in modern day professional wrestling. The reason it stands so high however is the quality of their work from bell to bell, and the fact that this may very well be the most superhero match I can think of.

Wrestling is inherently the story of good overcoming bad, of the hero defeating the villain. Somewhere along the way we the audience began to cheer for the villain as opposed to the hero, and the whole thing became somewhat messed up. John Cena vs. Randy Orton is 2000s professional wrestling told through a 1980s lens.

Here, Orton handcuffs Cena to the ringpost and proceeds to beat seven shades out of our hero. Cena doesn't give up, you know, because of that whole 'Never Give Up' thing, and eventually passes out. Orton revives him in order to dish out a bit more punishment.

Cena breaks free however, and in a beautiful moment of vengeance handcuffs Orton to himself. With nowhere to go Orton quits whilst in the STF, albeit an STF that sees Orton's own arm choking himself. You know, in that childhood 'why are you fighting yourself?' sort of manner.

This may be the best Orton/Cena match out there, out of about 1,473 they've had together.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
