Every WWE Royal Rumble Match - From Worst To Best

18. 1994

The 1994 Royal Rumble event is best remembered for the dark match, a battle between the two greatest jobbers of the 1990s; The Brooklyn Brawler going up against Jim Powers in a match that truly was for the ages. Brawler picked up the win with a swinging neckbreaker in an absolute classic. Wait, no, scrap that: the 1994 event is remembered for the finish of the Rumble itself, where Lex Luger and Bret Hart were eliminated at the same time, putting a cloud of confusion over the identity of the winner. Instead of restarting the match to decide a winner, both men had their hands raised and got title matches against Yokozuna at WrestleMania. An admittedly novel finish some 20 years ago, this was an example of cowardly and indecisive booking that ultimately benefited nobody at all. Luger's babyface run failed miserably, and what should have been the beginning of a true story for Bret Hart (and subsequently his brother Owen) ended up a damp squib. Still, that Brawler/Powers match was great. I assume.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
