9. 2009
Randy Orton occupies a strange position in the annals of professional wrestling. He was won everything there is to win, but a lot of the time it feels like he has won things merely to add to the list, as opposed to winning things with meaning. In 2009 he won the Royal Rumble, because he had to at some point. At this time Orton was in his Legacy phase, with Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase acting as his lackeys. They entered at 8, 10 and 15 respectively, and would dominate the entire Rumble without turning on each other, a surprising rarity in professional wrestling. This really put across the stable as a team as opposed to a group of back stabbing opportunists. Of course, they were heels. There were a number of fun interactions throughout the match too, most notably between CM Punk and William Regal and the Rhodes Brothers. In short, 2009 was a perfectly serviceable Rumble with no real flaws. The Undertaker also put in another fantastic performance, rounding his trio of great Rumbles towards the end of the noughties.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
