Every WWE Royal Rumble Match - From Worst To Best

25. 1993

In some ways, I feel a bit sorry for the 1993 Royal Rumble: it wasn't exactly a horrible match, it's just there was absolutely nothing to it. Admittedly, it was the first Rumble to come with the stipulation that the winner would receive a title shot at WrestleMania, which is something. The problem was that the number of potential WrestleMania main event names in the match were minimal. Most Rumbles have a number of non-entities in them, but take a cursory glance at the names who entered between 11 and 20; Skinner, Koko B. Ware, Samu, The Berzerker, The Undertaker, Terry Taylor, Damien Demento, Irwin R. Schyster, Tatanka and Jerry Sags. Only one of those men could plausibly headline WrestleMania, and it certainly ain't Samu. Yokozuna was being booked as the monster heel, and entered at 27 to predictably win the match. Randy Savage was last eliminated after going for a pin after a flying elbow, the stupidity of which amazed me even then when I was a mere seven years old.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
