It was telling how quickly the WWE women's division had grown and flourished underneath the new stewardship of Sasha Banks and Charlotte that even a moderately disappointing clash between the two at 2016's event would still rank as the second best female match in the show's history.

Foreshadowing what would become a significant problem in the league throughout the rest of the year and well into 2017, the booking threatened to undermine all their hard and high quality work, prematurely returning the title to 'The Queen' with the same knee-jerk decision making that saw her dethroned weeks earlier in a gripping Raw clash.

For whatever reason, WWE couldn't hold off on the blockbuster singles clash, giving it away as the centrepiece of the first post-Draft edition of the flagship show and regrettably removing much of the drama from what was now a misaligned rematch at the biggest show of the summer.

Not only could the match not equal Raw's drama, an early flub that saw Sasha planted flat on her back by Charlotte sucked the heat out of the match early on, giving both an uphill struggle as the contest continued. Pulling it back for a dramatic closing sequence, Banks drove her knees through Charlotte's spine to draw 'This Is Awesome' chants but left herself exposed for climactic conclusion, falling back on a Bank Statement to steal back the gold.
