Fantasy-Booking A WWE G1 Climax
4. Being Exposed Through Wrestling
The G1's reliance on wrestling proficiency is a blessing for some, but a nightmare for others. For every Ishii, there is a Toru Yano. YTR narrowly squeezes into the G1 each year because his comedy character brings an added, if somewhat unnecessary, dimension to the tournament. To put it another way, Yoshitatsu won't unwittingly find himself in a position to command a G1 spot.
The WWE however, operates on a slightly different basis. Jinder Mahal is a perfect example of how look, character, gimmick, and all the cosmetic aspects of wrestling can translate into success in the WWE. Strip all of that back however, and place him in the G1 field we have assembled, and he looks wildly out of his depth.
Wrestling in nine straight high-profile singles matches would do far more harm than good for The Maharaja. While he is the clear odd-one-out, there is potential for over-exposure on the part of some of WWE's other pet projects.
Baron Corbin is being treated as a serious threat in the WWE, despite only starting wrestling a few years ago. Similarly, Braun Strowman has become hugely popular without doing much more than roaring and throwing things. The intense scrutiny that comes with G1 performances could make or break these young guns.
