It was during his 2026 conversation with Stephanie McMahon that CM Punk revealed that the only change Vince McMahon had for the rough outline of his iconic June 27th Raw promo was to mock her more. Beyond that bizarre and yet curiously familiar anecdote, everything else 'The Straight Edge Superstar' put pen to paper on was what made air. He knew his microphone would get cut off to signal the end of the show. Beyond that, he was provided the platform to find out if he'd just sewn gold.

That'd probably be selling it short.

Punk seemed to template the promo around ticking off every one of the well-known un-sayables within WWE, knowing that just by cutting it, he was revealing that he'd somehow dodged some deadly micromanagement. This revealed that he had a finger on the pulse of what many of the disillusioned fans were discussing, further enhancing his already-well-established relationship with them. But, perhaps cognisant of prior worked shoots not always landing, he then made sure to drop names and references that the most casual of fans could enjoy. It was impressive - he could call John Cena and The Rock ass-kissers to get curious oohs and ahhs from the live crowd, while melting screens of hardcores at home with discussion of New Japan Pro Wrestling, Colt Cabana, and the "glad-handed, nonsensical, douchebag Yes Men, like John Laurinaitis" Vince McMahon was surrounding himself with. 

It's impact was immediate, and (eventually) immune to lousy booking. Punk's iconic Money In The Bank WWE Championship win over John Cena later that month was the moment he etched himself in stone as one of wrestling's made men, and even when the company horrifically mangled the follow-up, it didn't stop him ending up on the right side of the glass ceiling. It crossed over as well, bringing fans in (or back) to WWE on the strength of a possible new top star, and a vision of what a contemporary one might look like. When it all fell apart for good in 2014, he was gone but never ever forgotten, driving the earth-shattering success behind his AEW and WWE returns in 2021 and 2023 respectively.
