WWE's next premium live event, WrestleMania Backlash 2022, takes place in Providence, Rhode Island on Sunday 8 May, and the promotion confirmed its first match over the weekend.

In an announcement that could have been foreseen from the events of last week's SmackDown, Ronda Rousey will challenge for Charlotte Flair's SmackDown Women's Championship in an "I Quit" match.

The promotion made the bout official through the latest episode of Talking Smack. On Friday's SmackDown show, Rousey had her "I Quit" challenge turned down by Flair, who told her defeated WrestleMania 38 opponent to return to the back of the line. Approaching authority figure Adam Pearce later in the night, Ronda was told that management were considering the match regardless of Flair's words, stating that the former Raw Women's Champion would have an answer in due course.

Rousey earned her first shot at the SmackDown belt by winning the 2022 Royal Rumble in what was her first WWE appearance since taking a hiatus in April 2019. She was then defeated by Flair at 'Mania 38, with Charlotte taking advantage while Rousey's attention was occupied by referee Charles Robinson, who had been knocked down by a wayward Charlotte spear.

Flair had tapped out while Robinson was down, which was the crux of Ronda's case for a rematch.
