How Far Could A Possible Mandy Rose And Sonya Deville Romance Go?
While there have been a number of over-the-top and flamboyant characters over the years, they were merely reduced to lower card comedy or sideshow acts. Take, for instance, Eric Bischoff's HLA (Hot Lesbian Action) segments that went on for a period of time. The ladies that participated in this were not official WWE superstars. Instead, they were models that were featured on the show to cater mainly to the heterosexual male audience.
Who could ever forget when Billy Gunn and Chuck Palumbo were put together as a tag team, managed by their flamboyant personal stylist Rico? Billy and Chuck became increasingly affectionate towards each other, showing signs of a homosexual relationship. This led to a commitment ceremony between the two that was eventually revealed to be a publicity stunt ordered by Rico. The ceremony never took place and Rico turned on the duo, becoming a heel in the process.
From that point on for several years, WWE shied away from featuring characters that were perceived to be queer. Finally, in the early 2010s, WWE began to acknowledge their LGBTQ+ fanbase and respecting their superstars who represented that community.
