WWE 2K23 developers have revealed that 2K couldn't include the sought-after WarGames match in previous series entries.

Creative Director Lynell Jinks, Associate Gameplay Producer Bryan Williams and Showcase Lead Designer Dino Zucconi all sat down for an interview with Screen Rant. During it, Jinks said that 2K's devs had to completely "rebuild the gameplay engine from the ground up" in 2K22 before even thinking about making WarGames a reality this year.

In other words, 2K22 came too early for programmers to figure out how the famous twin-ring and twin-cage bout would work - they had to spend a solid 12 months or so fiddling around with assets from the 'Backstage Brawl' match type first.

The prior engine, one used up until the disastrous 2K20 in 2019 "wasn’t really built to handle something of [WarGames] magnitude". It took a ton of technical wizardry from the programmers and graphical team before everyone's top wishlist item could come to life.

WarGames is being touted as one of the banner features in this year's WWE 2K23. The game launches worldwide on 17 March. Those who purchase the Deluxe or Icon editions will be able to play three days earlier on 14 March.
