It's Official: AEW Is As Good As WWE Is As Bad
The Tribal Chief Roman Reigns is a great act that invariably goes one big match too long. Even that which is good is often actively nonsensical. Drew McIntyre, the babyface, enjoyed a four-on-one advantage at Clash of Champions in a very long but well-received series with Randy Orton. On WWE TV this week, Edge cut a pair of great promos that contradicted one another because the latter was scripted out of a petty desire to counter-programme. He resented McIntyre for talking up a brand like a mascot on RAW, and not recognising the imminent threat of a legend gunning for his title. On NXT, Edge...talked up the brand like a mascot. He said if he hasn't made his mind up over who to challenge at WrestleMania before the TakeOver match between Finn Bálor and Kyle O'Reilly, it might sway him. So he's either going to not bother watching it with a keen interest (he's 47, should be right up his alley) or he's going to decide it wasn't that great. Neither implication is good.
And that's the good stuff, per consensus. Elsewhere, Randy Orton is feuding with a woman playing a child playing hopscotch. Bobby Lashley Vs. Riddle is like Ted DiBiase Vs. that kid who bounced a basketball, only it happens every week and the kid - who is probably more intelligent than Riddle - is meant to be a star babyface. Sasha Banks is laughing like Finn Bálor used to smile when feigning joy over getting one over Reginald. In AEW, every major tag team holds a philosophy dear to their hearts; in WWE, few tag teams hold one another close to their hearts.
AEW Dynamite promotes a ****+ level match nine weeks out of 10. In 2021, only the January 20 episode failed to light the fuse.
