Jeff Hardy is now a five-time WWE Intercontinental Champion, after once more winning the belt on last night's SummerSlam go-home SmackDown.

The 'Charismatic Enigma' bagged the slightly-less-big-one with victory over AJ Styles, despite the fact the incumbent injured the challenger's knee earlier in the night. Ultimately, Styles' act of sabotage backfired; Hardy used his new knee brace to counter a Styles Clash, before claiming the win with a Twist of Fate/Swanton Bomb combo.

After the match, Jeff celebrated before his adoring, albeit virtual public within WWE's novel 'ThunderDome'. Brother Matt, currently employed by rival promotion AEW, didn't let interpromotional enmity come before family, Tweeting his congratulations to 'Brother Nero' after SmackDown:

Hardy's fifth Intercontinental Championship win now ties him with Wade Barrett, Edge, and Triple H for number of reigns. He last won the belt in September 2007, when he beat Umaga on Raw for the honour. The new champion is not currently scheduled for Sunday's SummerSlam, but we can almost certainly guarantee WWE will find a place for him on the card before the show kicks off.

WWE SummerSlam 2020 takes place this Sunday, from Orlando, FL's Amway Center.

He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
