John Cena returned to WWE SmackDown last night, though he probably wished he hadn't bothered, as he now has to face The Fiend at WrestleMania (though given what happened last time they met at the Show of Shows, it's a mild inconvenience if anything).

Big John closed Friday's episode with an effective valedictory, telling the Boston, MA crowd that he'd decided to forego 'Mania this year, on the basis that spots should be earned, not demanded (he's changed his tune from a few years back).

So this was "bye for now", then. Cena said he didn't know when he'd be back, and thanked the fans before walking off with just a tear or two in his eyes.

But he wasn't getting away with that so easily. Just as Cena was concluding his military salute at the top of the ramp, the lights went out, accompanied by some familiar, Fiendish sound effects.

When they came back on, the Firefly Fun House presenter himself was obviously stood there. He pointed at the WrestleMania sign - because even manifestations of one's repressed psyche can't help themselves - to which Cena tipped his hat, and gave the classic 'you can't see me' gesture.

In other words, it's on. After what happened to The Fiend at Super ShowDown, John ought not to be too worried.

He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
