JR Needed A Dictionary To Understand THIS WWE Gimmick

Jim Ross didn't quite understand what this famous WWE gimmick was all about.

'What the f*ck does that mean?'.

That's probs not far away from what legendary announcer Jim Ross was saying to himself when the then-WWF introduced Lex Luger as the 'Narcissist' in early-1993. Originally, the fed had debuted Lex as 'Narcissus' at the '93 Royal Rumble, but they'd altered that by the time JR was pulling on a toga for WrestleMania IX several months later.

The Oklahoma native was totally flummoxed by the gimmick at first.

Ross admitted to co-host Conrad Thompson (via the pair's 'Grilling JR' podcast) that he literally had to consult a dictionary and look 'Narcissist' up. That wasn't a word he'd stumbled upon too often during his many years in the pro wrestling industry, and it seemed like a mouthful.

Plus, he didn't want to do Luger or his new employer a disservice by failing to grasp what it was all about. So, JR pulled out the English manual and read up on what Vince McMahon's bold new heel character was trying to present.

JR also told Conrad that the company could've done a better job of explaining the gimmick to fans back then too.
