Kofi and CM Punk formed a brief alliance in 2008, after Kingston rushed to Punk's aid after the backstage attack by Legacy that would cost him the World Heavyweight Championship. Punk would get a modicum of revenge on the fortunate sons soon after, as the duo defeated Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase for the WWE World Tag Team Championships in October. Before the year was up however, the titles had been lost to Miz & Morrison.

Despite their success, Kofi and Punk actually tagged together on TV on just the four occasions, only faced a grand total of five different men in that time. They lost to Miz & Morrison twice, but were successful against Rhodes & DiBiase and then Rhodes & Manu.

Still, the chemistry between the two was clear, and that chemistry would extend to a number of singles matches between them further down the line.
