2. The Rock Vs. Steve Austin - WrestleMania X-Seven
A lot of people get fooled by the (admittedly wonderful) 'My Way' video package into thinking that Austin versus Rock at WrestleMania X-Seven had some sort of amazing build. Truth is, it was muddled at best with an unwanted storyline where Austin's wife Debra was made the manager of The Rock by Vince McMahon.
The weak build was forgotten the moment Austin walked out in front of 67,925 inside the Houston Astrodome. Even though both men were babyfaces here, hometown boy Stone Cold was the favourite. The electricity was palpable. This was the two biggest stars clashing in the biggest match on the biggest show of the year with the richest prize in the game on the line.
The way it should be.
Like Austin/Bret, this was just a flat-out brawl, with both guys wasting no time in punching the living daylights out of each other. They continued to punch each other. And kick. And punch some more. They brawled a little, too. I think there might have been two or three wrestling moves in there but that's not really important, anyway.
The thing I liked so much about this was how simple the story was but how well it was told. Steve Austin HAD to win. The Rock HAD to win. Neither man could afford to lose and both men would do whatever it takes to win, and that was reflected perfectly in the match.
And in the finish, as Austin enlisted the help of his arch enemy Vince McMahon to get the job done. Fans can and will argue over whether it was the right decision to turn the Texas Rattlesnake, but it was a suitably shocking ending to what had been an incredible rollercoaster of a match.
