Matt Cross Interview: MLW Return, Current Wrestling Landscape, Lucha Underground, More

Between Jacob Fatu vs. Alexander Hammerstone in the main event and the opening-round matches in the Opera Cup, MLW Fightland has a killer card on paper, including you against Calvin Tankman. How are you feeling heading into it?

Cross: I'm really looking forward to it. Right out of the gate, it's first time ever. I've been wrestling for 22 years, so it gets increasingly harder to get those first-time-ever encounters and they always keep things fresh, new and exciting. I personally feel I have my best matches against competent big men, so be careful what you wish for because that's exactly what I've got. Let's see what we can do and what will unfold at Fightland and I'm looking forward to it.

Talk about your history with MLW and being a part of some of their first shows back in 2003. What's it been like being back after so long?

Cross: I was a part of, if you want to call it, the original MLW back in 2003 I believe down in Florida, but who's going to remember that? The last time I worked with them was nearly 20 years ago. I want to say even Terry Funk was on the show or something, but that's sort of representative of my career: I'm this guy that's been around and sort of done everything. People will say, “Oh, I hope you debut in PWG!” and I'll say “I was on their first show.”

If someone remembers I was with Wrestling Society X, they're going to forget I was on Tough Enough. If they remember Tough Enough, they'll forget Lucha Underground. If they remember Lucha Underground, they'll forget the Best of Backyard Wrestling video series. Everyone's career in wrestling is going to be insane because this is an insane business, but mine has somehow arguably been more insane than other people's.
