It's official: Matt Hardy is no longer under WWE contract.

Months of speculation came to a head as the 45-year-old let his contract expire at midnight on 1 March, before using his MATTHARDYBRAND YouTube channel to post a special Thoughts From The Throne announcement video in which he announced he is now a free agent.

"I have decided to let my contract with WWE expire," he said. "I am going to become a free agent, and that's not saying I'm never going to return to WWE."

In his speech, Hardy announced his intentions to take a break and that he was leaving WWE as him and the promotion "are on different pages" when it comes to his "creative stance and outlook on myself and my career" and what he wants to do with the last few years of his run.

Recent weeks had seen the veteran linked with a surprising role in NXT, though AEW has been heavily speculated as well. Saturday's post-Revolution press scrum saw Tony Khan deflect a question about Hardy potentially signing with his promotion. We'll obviously have to wait and see where Matt lands, though it looks like it won't be NXT.
