May 19: The True Story Behind Kane’s Most Out There WWE Storyline

Kane Big Show WrestleMania 22

Funny, because several WWE Superstars did—to Kane, a man who enjoyed electrocuting testicles and setting poor pricks on fire. To allow the audience an opening into his disturbed psyche, WWE had various performers say this date to Kane, purely so that he could flip out.

Kane, not particularly adept at self-care, didn’t help himself in a backstage altercation with partner-cum-rival The Big Show. Show asked him what was wrong, since Kane was ranting and raving and scrunching his face in a state of psychological agony. Kane, tortured by the mere mention of this date, couldn’t bear to hear it—and so he made Big Show say it (?), by telling him that he “said that date”, blackening his mood.

“What, May 19?” Show responded conveniently, to which Kane attempted to gouge out his eyes. This would all come to make sense—the eye-gouging, not the storyline, which was bullsh*t.

At the Backlash pay-per-view, a plodding match between the two behemoths was mercifully brought to a halt. A voice—Kane’s, the man who hated the date May 19—started whispering “May 19” over and over again, as the arena became shrouded in blood red.

The very next night, Kane defeated Rob Conway on RAW. Shawn Michaels, in his capacity as Special Guest Referee, did not wear black and white stripes. He wore a t-shirt with ‘May 19’ written across it roughly 50 times, which he then put on Conway, whom Kane subsequently brutalised. Michaels mugged for the crowd throughout this comedy segment—a comedy segment designed to market a gory horror film—at the end of which he shouted “May 19! May 19” behind Kane’s back before draping the microphone over Conway’s chest. See, Kane thought Conway had shouted it, and proceeded to annihilate him further.
