There was backstage heat on the NFL man before WWE let him go.

There was significant backstage heat on Rob Gronkowski before his WWE release earlier this week.

A new report from Fightful states that this stemmed from the NFL man's hesitation to perform his dive at WrestleMania 36, which effectively put the tapings on a temporary halt as things were held up. As was already reported, Vince McMahon, in a move that further cements him as one of the most interesting human beings to ever have lived, had to perform the dive himself before Gronk was convinced he wasn't going to get hurt.

Vince McMahon is 74 years old.

On top of this, the Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer has revealed that Gronk was working on a multi-event deal with WWE. WrestleMania 36 was the first, with the 31-year-old fulfilling his hosting duties (and winning the 24/7 Championship), and SummerSlam 2020 was supposed to be the second. Gronkowski was originally supposed to wrestle at 'The Biggest Party of the Summer' before wrapping his obligated dates with an appearance (and possibly another match) on a future Saudi Arabian show.

Gronk's WWE tenure ended on this week's episode of Raw, with R-Truth rolling him up to regain the 24/7 Title.
