New TNA: 5 Things That Work (And 5 That Don't)

5. Announcers In A Separate Room, Far Away From Ringside

As welcome as Josh Matthews and Taz are as the new announce team, many fans were left scratching their heads when they first saw that the pair were locked away inside a little room whilst calling the matches. Frankly, there is A LOT to be said for announcers sitting at ringside. Could you imagine classic wrestling moments like €œGood God almighty he€™s broken in half!€ being even half as effective with the announcers removed from the action? Nope. Even in €˜old school€™ TNA, when the announcers were closer to the entrance ramp than they were to the ring, it still felt more vibrant, more alive than it does with the knowledge that the two voices we can hear are calling the match from some sort of €˜control deck€™ situated somewhere else in the building. Ideally, the announcers are a sort of €˜halfway house€™ between the performer and the fan and although Destination America are obviously going for a feel similar to that of an American football or baseball game, the desired effect just isn€™t there. In mainstream American sports, the announcers are presented as having €˜the best seat in the house€™, in new TNA, they appear to be locked in a broom cupboard.

I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction. I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long! If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it). I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work. Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that! Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?) Latcho Drom, - CQ
