NJPW G1 Climax Final 2016: Every Match Ranked From Worst To Best

1. G1 Climax Final: Kenny Omega Vs. Hirooki Goto

Result: Omega becomes the first Canadian-born G1 winner after drilling Goto with the One-Winged Angel (26:49).

Rating: Though the undercard on the whole was merely decent-to-good, the big one more than delivered. Meltzer tripping over himself to praise the match was not unfounded: this was everything you'd want from a G1 final.

From bell-to-bell it was an intense, technically superb slugfest that just kept going and going, with Omega doing a superb job selling the injured knee throughout which added a ton of great ring psychology.

These guys took each other to the limit and either winning would've been a satisfying result, though Omega was really on fire here and ultimately felt like the right choice.

It's tough to pick out individual highlights but Omega breaking the Sleeper by jumping off the top rope was imaginative and brutal, and who could resist Omega's Styles Clash to Goto? Kenny's post-match celebration was also totally awesome, especially in waving the Bullet Club flag rather than the G1 flag, and throwing a little shade at WWE (in Japanese). Terrific.

9/10
