NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 12: Every Match Ranked From Worst To Best
2. IWGP United States Title - No DQ: Kenny Omega (c) Vs. Chris Jericho
Result: Omega drills Jericho with the One-Winged Angel on a chair to retain the strap (34:37).
Rating: Nobody was expecting career-best work from either men here but rather a car-crash spectacle, and on that front it absolutely delivered.
The No DQ stipulation was obviously incredibly smart booking for a match pitting the 47-year-old Jericho against one of the best younger wrestlers in the world, helping make Jericho look totally plausible and hold his own.
Even with the stipulation, few were surely expecting Jericho to go for 35 minutes, and his conditioning clearly served him well here. He also played the heel role to perfection, even locking a Lion Tamer on one of the ring crew with a certain delicious relish.
This was a ludicrously entertaining brawl, which is exactly what it needed to be. The One-Winged Angel counter into the Walls was incredible, to the point that Jericho could've believably won the match here without hurting Omega's credibility. The subsequent rope-grab in a No DQ match was undeniably weird, but the final One-Winged Angel on the chair was an absolutely savage way to wrap things up.
Omega continues to prove he's a one-in-a-million star and Jericho looked fantastic considering his age and the length of the match. Not the most technically proficient match of the night, but it was never aiming for that, and as a dynamic brawl, it totally worked. 9/10
