The Kaientai Vs. Val Venis programme is mostly remembered for the shock value angle in which Mr. Yamaguchi-san, enraged that Venis slept with his wife, threatened to chop his “pee-pee” off. A silly castration angle persists as some beyond-the-pale ratings stunt, but in reality, the WWF of 1998 was casually awful in so many more insidious and dangerous ways.

To delve deeper into that point, the “choppy choppy” angle wasn’t even the ugliest aspect of that programme.

Firstly, Venis was “saved” by John Wayne Bobbitt, who in real life had been castrated. Bobbitt was presented as a babyface alongside Venis, but if you explore the story, he…really wasn’t.

Moreover, as sleuthed by David Bixenspan, the actress who played the adulterer was underage - 17 - when she was filmed in bed with Venis. Then, during an angle in which Venis rescued her from a paddling, carrying her as the bride crossing the threshold, the camera was fixed in an upskirt position. In another skit, filmed behind a curtain, Venis and Mrs. Yamaguchi-san were caught showering together. Jerry Lawler on commentary said he wasn’t sure if he wanted to see it - until he saw the silhouette of the young actress, at which point he exclaimed “Whoa - I do want to see this!”
