More than half a year after they first started feuding, it's official - Bray Wyatt will defend the WWE Championship against Randy Orton at WrestleMania.

The program first began on the Smackdown after SummerSlam, when Wyatt interrupted a promo Orton was cutting in the ring. Things soon escalated, and a match between the two was signed for Backlash. Orton, still suffering the effects of a concussion from Brock Lesnar, had to miss the bout, and Wyatt wrestled Kane instead.

At No Mercy, Wyatt and Orton finally faced off, but "The Eater of Worlds" picked up the win with help from a returning Luke Harper. Soon afterwards, Orton and Kane faced Wyatt and Harper on Smackdown, but during the course of the match, Orton turned on Kane. He later explained his actions by saying "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em."

From then on, Orton was a loyal member of The Wyatt Family, capturing the Smackdown Tag Team Titles with Bray. After they lost the belts to American Alpha, though, a rift began to develop between Harper and Orton - one that eventually led to Harper being ousted from the group.

Orton managed to win the 2017 Royal Rumble match to claim a WWE Title shot, but he decided to forfeit it rather than cash in against his leader. However, once AJ Styles won a match to seemingly claim the WrestleMania shot against Wyatt, Orton revealed that his fealty was a ruse - he burned down Wyatt's cabin, and with it, the remains of Sister Abigail.

That led to a singles match on this week's Smackdown pitting Orton against Styles, with the winner being named the undisputed number one contender. Orton scored the pin with an RKO, punching his ticket to WrestleMania once and for all.
