Eric Bischoff fired the first shot in the Monday Night War with a bullet named Lex Luger.

The Total Package shocked the world by walking out before Ric Flair locked up with Sting during the first Nitro. He was recognized as a WWE guy, having spent the past two years as an American hero and competing at a house show just one night before. Apparently, Luger’s contract had expired and he expressed interest with best friend Sting about coming back to WCW. Bischoff signed him in secrecy to maximize the shock factor of his appearance and immediately create a sense of unpredictability surrounding the new show.

Luger would go on to have a very successful run, winning the World Heavyweight Championship and leading WCW in the never-ending fight against the nWo.
