Ranking The 26 WWE SummerSlam Main Events From Worst To Best
15. John Cena (c) vs. Randy Orton (WWE Championship) - SummerSlam 2007
Remember when John Cena vs. Randy Orton was a fresh matchup? This was the first time the two had met in a one-on-one match for the WWE Championship. Seven years later, WWE has repeated that matchup a couple dozen times, to the point that many fans will chant boring or some other derisive phrase no matter how good of a match they are putting on. On this particular night, the two superstars had their usual solid match, with Orton very nearly pulling out the victory, but once again Cena would Rise Above Vipers and put Orton down for the three count. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amaV6_ibCFY Shortly thereafter, Orton would continue the tradition Edge started and punt Cenas father in the head on Raw.
14. Chris Benoit (c) vs. Randy Orton (WWE Championship) - SummerSlam 2004
This would be the first failed attempt to push Randy Orton as the Greatest Superstar of Our Era. After improbably winning the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XX, Chris Benoit would see his title reign end after five months in a hard-fought battle. Orton had lost his Intercontinental Championship the previous month, then won a battle royal to become No. 1 contender for the WHC. The story during the match was Orton staying with and matching Benoit, who brought his usual aggressive style to the fight. In the end, Orton won and Benoit shook his hand. The next night, Evolution would kick Orton out of the group in an attempt to launch Randy into the stratosphere as a babyface champ. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsxVmJ1oBH8 That effort lasted all of four weeks, before Orton lost his title to HHH. But dont worry, Orton would get a few more world title reigns.
