Similar to “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan (who won the first Royal Rumble), it’s tough to rank the first King of the Ring, Don Muraco.

When Muraco won the 1985 tournament, it was nothing more than a one-night, 16-man tourney at a Massachusetts house show. It also was after Muraco’s run as Intercontinental Champion and more than a decade into his career. Muraco would hover around the WWF’s bloated midcard for about three years before leaving the company.

Since this was the first tournament and well before it was established as something of prestige, we can give Muraco something of a pass here. But we still have to leave his ranking low compared to others.
